As the days will pass, at least some of my mureeds will realize the very important role they will have to perform in life. God has brought us together at this time of the infancy of the Message, when it has not yet reached its destination, but is yet rising to fulfil its destiny. Each mureed who has not only a desire of being helped by the Message, but has the desire to help further the Message, will find at the end that their role in life is a great and important one. Their part is to take this Message with faith and reverence and respect. The respect and reverence paid to the Messenger does not really take its place. The Murshid is the pen by which the letter is written. The reverence is due to God, who wrote the letter, not to the pen. Humanity has always made this mistake.
What I mean is that the Message comes in the words that are given to the mureeds by the name of Sacred Readings, the value of which must be recognized as a sacred ideal, and they must be read like a Mantra. If it is subtle and delicate to understand, leave it for the moment for time to solve it, have patience, do not tear it up. Remember its delicacy and sacredness. If it seems at times simple, think how simple things, when the time comes, prove to be subtle. There comes a time when simple things unfold themselves and prove to be mountains of Truth. Therefore, we must unfold ourselves to the simplicity of things. Think of the simplicity of the words of Christ, of the suras of the Koran, of the Old Testament, of the Zoroastrian prayers, of the Mantras of the Hindus. Do not think if it is simple, it is not worthwhile. The secret is hidden in what seems simple.
Another secret is this. It is my own experience. At times I had a question in my mind, puzzling my mind. I went in the presence of my Murshid, and there was no more question. Why? Because that which is complicated is not so by nature, but by the absence of light. However, complex a thing may seem, when the light shines it becomes clear. Therefore, if the words in the presence of the Murshid seem simple, it is complexity that is made simple for you. Simplicity and complexity are the conditions of light, the day and night.
Furthermore, think, my mureeds, that you are the trustees of this Message that is given into your hands: to read it, to contemplate it, to live it, and to benefit by the words. By the help of your Murshid, you will spread the Message amidst the world’s struggle. This will fulfil your duty for which God has brought you in the Sufi Order. Keep it as authentic as you can. You must save it from the mocking, doubting world, from sceptical minds that have in all times opposed and misunderstood all that has been given to them as a sacred blessing. This Reading must not be considered as science, philosophy, or a study; it is more than that. Think of the Chinese, how the teachings of Confucius have been preserved for many generations. Think of the race of Beni Israel that has preserved for the world the morality and religion that were given from time to time. My mureeds must see their situation in this light and what their responsibilities are as my first mureeds, so as to have self-confidence and faith. Remember my words again and again: there is nothing impossible in the world.
